In the heart of Monteverde, Raíces offers more than just a tour, it’s a sensorial journey into Costa Rica’s regenerative soul. Designed by Garúa Ecoexperiencias, this immersive activity blends ancestral wisdom, rural traditions, and ecological mindfulness into a transformational travel experience. From the moment guests arrive at this family-owned farm, they are welcomed into a living philosophy that breathes sustainability, community, and deep cultural respect.
A grounding journey through soil, spirit, and silence
The experience begins with a regenerative welcome an intimate introduction to Garúa’s mission and vision, rooted in the belief that travel should heal, not harm. From there, guests are invited to remove their shoes and walk barefoot along a forest trail. This simple act becomes a powerful ritual of presence: feeling the textures of the earth, breathing in the forest air, and letting the sounds of nature lead the way. It’s an invitation to slow down and remember what it feels like to truly belong to the land.
Stories in every station: Coffee, cacao, and edible forests
As the journey continues, each station reveals another layer of Costa Rican heritage and ecological wisdom. At the coffee station, visitors are invited to take part in every step of the traditional process: the beans are sun-dried, then pounded in a wooden mortar (pilón) to remove their husks. Next, they are roasted over an open wood fire, and finally ground by hand using a manual grinder similar to those used for corn. Each step revives ancestral techniques passed down through generations.
Guided by women whose stories span generations, this station highlights the intersection of sustainability, culture, and gender empowerment. Nearby, a lush edible forest offers a living classroom where guests learn about native plants and local food resilience.
The cacao station evokes both history and ceremony. Guests explore the sacred symbolism of cacao in Mesoamerican cultures, touch raw pods, and hand-grind the beans to make a rich paste. Adjacent to this space, a vibrant pollinator garden bursts with butterflies, bees, and hummingbirds a reminder of the invisible workers sustaining our ecosystems.
Sweet endings at the trapiche and warm local hospitality
Toward the end of the experience, guests are led to a traditional sugarcane field, where they sip freshly pressed juice and witness how the old wooden trapiche mill turns with purpose and rhythm. It’s a moment of sweetness, both literal and emotional, that ties past to present in a celebration of shared roots.
The day closes in the social area, where guests enjoy a hot drink (coffee, tea, or sweet water) and a typical “gallito” snack. It’s here, seated with new friends and full hearts, that many realize this wasn’t just a tour, it was a return to what matters.
